The Miniature American Shepherd is generally a healthy and long-lived dog. However, like all breeds, it may be predisposed to certain hereditary diseases. A responsible breeder tests their breeding stock for the main genetic diseases, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, hereditary eye diseases (PRA, CEA), and drug sensitivity (MDR1).
Their beautiful coat requires regular brushing (once or twice a week) to prevent tangles, with extra attention during shedding periods. They require adequate daily physical activity and mental stimulation to be a happy and balanced dog.
